Despite being a member for more than 50 years, a 92-year-old woman is no longer welcome in her church.
Family members say 92-year-old Josephine King was shocked when she
received a letter from the church, saying she was no longer a member.
“Josephine King is no longer considered a member of the First African
Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia,” Gerald Simmons, King’s nephew,
read from a letter she received from the church.
The letter, which was signed by the pastor, said that King “has shown
non-support” toward the church by not providing “constant and
consistent financial and physical participation.”
“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked,” Simmons told WALB.
He says King was sick for several months and was not physically able
to attend services. Also, he says she has tithed in the past when she
was able.
“You shouldn’t chase the individuals down,” he said. “You shouldn’t do that. If that’s the case, you’re money hungry.”
Simmons says others in the church have received a similar letter for not tithing.
“You have to have money to make these churches run, but it’s not
about money. It’s about God. You have to put God first,” he said.
